Flu kills an average of 11,000 people in England every year, and it can make children seriously ill.

The best way to protect them and the whole family from flu this winter is by vaccinating your 2 or 3-year-old and helping to stop the spread.

Don’t delay, book your little one in for their flu vaccination at your GP surgery.

*Note: An alternative of an injected vaccine can be requested

Why should I get my little one vaccinated?

Flu can be really unpleasant for little ones, and in some cases, serious.

Children are also ‘super spreaders’, meaning they could easily pass it on to the rest of the family too.

Older children are offered the nasal flu vaccination at school. You will be asked to fill in a consent form and you can choose whether or not you want your child to have the vaccination.

The nasal flu vaccination is quick and easy, and means everyone will be protected.

Does the nasal flu spray contain gelatine?

Yes, it contains very small traces of pork gelatine.

There are injectable flu vaccines that don’t contain pork gelatine. You can discuss your child having one with your doctor if stocks are available later in the year.

However, these are much less effective than the nasal spray and may also be less effective at reducing the spread of flu in the community, putting older and more vulnerable people at risk.

Quick flu facts

The flu vaccination for children is a nasal spray rather than a needle. It tickles a bit and definitely doesn’t hurt!

There are few side effects – most commonly a runny nose for a few days after the vaccination.

Children with flu have the same symptoms as adults – but if complications develop they’re much likely to end up in hospital.
